6–8 weeks

From the investor side

What 25 years of backing founders has taught me.

  1. Founders choose their backers too. Whether you run a fund, a corporate unit or an accelerator, the best founders pick the people they trust. Programmes and investors that can't earn that trust only see the companies nobody else wanted.
  2. Generic advice doesn't move a company. Founders get plenty of opinions. What helps is someone who has written the cheques and sat in the investment committee, telling them how investors will actually read their pitch.
  3. Speed beats process. Rounds close and good deals go to whoever decides first. Support that runs on a slow calendar arrives after the moment has passed.
